Knowing the Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the second main cause of cancer related deaths in women, after lung cancer. While medical and technological advances in treatment and screening have increased the survival rates, there are still approximately fewer than 1 million cases reported in a year in India. Awareness of its symptoms is the best way to diagnosing it as early as possible, and making treatment comparatively easier.

The female breast, is made up of fat, connective tissue, and lobules, which produce milk. There are also tiny ducts which carry the milk to the nipple.Breast cancer occurs when the cells that make up the breast begin to act abnormally and grow uncontrollably. There are two types of breast cancers:

1.      Ductal carcinoma: Which begins in the cells of the milk duct
2.      Lobular carcinoma: Which begins in the cells of the lobules

Symptoms of breast cancer are subtle, but not much. The first detectable symptom is usually a hardened area or lump in the breast or in the armpit, which can be felt. Other symptoms include:

·         A pain in the armpits, or a breast that doesn’t change with the monthly cycle
·         Pitting or redness of the skin of the breast
·         A rash around or on the nipple
·         Discharge from the nipple, which maybe bloody
·         Sunken or inverted nipple
·         Peeling, flaking, or scaling of the breast or nipple
·         A change in size or shape of the breast

Regular self-checks of the breast are something which every woman practise, and any abnormality or symptom must reported to the doctor for examination.
